When demand peaks

Winter weather and short daylight slow outdoor door-knocking across the region, so canvassing and hiring typically run hardest from spring through early fall.

Door-to-door permit rules in New York City

New York City stopped licensing home improvement salespeople in August 2020 — the contractor needs a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license, and employee salespeople are exempt. There's no citywide door-to-door solicitor permit, but Long Island towns like Huntington and Hempstead require their own, and Nassau and Suffolk counties regulate home improvement sales.

  • NYC: Local Law 31 of 2020 repealed the Home Improvement Salesperson license (effective August 9, 2020).
  • NYC: contractors who solicit, sell, or perform home improvement work need a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license; an individual employee salesperson and jobs under $200 are exempt.
  • Town of Huntington: peddlers and solicitors need a Town Clerk license (expires December 31) — new applicants are fingerprinted and submit two passport photos; non-residents file a surety bond.
  • Town of Hempstead: door-to-door soliciting requires a permit with photo ID.
  • Nassau County: a home improvement salesperson can't negotiate for a licensed contractor until the licensee holds a letter of authorization for them.
  • Suffolk County: Consumer Affairs issues a separate Home Improvement Sales license alongside the contractor license.

Long Island rules are set town by town — check the town clerk (and the county's home improvement licensing) before canvassing in any new town.

Summary for planning only, not legal advice. Rules change — confirm the current ordinance with the city before your team starts knocking. Last checked October 2026 (NYC rule since Aug 2020; some town forms date to 2018).

How it works

From job post to booked interview — automatically

1

We flood the top of your funnel

Your roles go live with conversion-tuned apply pages we run for you — built to turn job-board and ad traffic into completed applications in under two minutes.

2

Every applicant reviewed — AI insight, human judgment

The moment an application lands, it's reviewed and benchmarked against your role's criteria and hard requirements — and your RepFlux team applies real human judgment on top. Nothing sits unread, and nobody reaches your calendar on an algorithm's word alone.

3

Qualified candidates book themselves

Candidates who clear the bar pick an interview slot on the spot — straight onto your Google Calendar, solo or panel. Automated SMS and email follow-up chases anyone who stalls, and rebooks no-shows.

More than software. More than an agency.

A real recruiting team, amplified by a hiring engine

Software alone can't hire. Agencies alone can't scale. Your RepFlux retainer buys both — the engine does the relentless part, your team does the judgment part.

The engine never sleeps

  • Reviews and benchmarks every applicant the moment they apply
  • Books interviews against your live calendar — solo, group, or panel
  • Chases stalls and no-shows by SMS and email, around the clock
  • Tracks every metric live, down to the individual candidate

Your team never guesses

  • Calibrates screening to your market, your roles, your bar
  • Applies human judgment and review — no algorithm decides alone
  • Manages your job posts and funnels, adjusting week over week
  • Real people who know your account and answer when you call

Questions, answered

Do door-to-door reps need their own NYC home improvement salesperson license?+

No. NYC stopped licensing home improvement salespeople on August 9, 2020. The contractor still needs a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license for jobs over $200, and an individual employee salesperson is exempt. Confirm current rules with DCWP before you start.

Do Long Island towns require a solicitor permit?+

Many do. Huntington requires a peddler/solicitor license from the Town Clerk with fingerprinting and passport photos, and Hempstead requires a permit with photo ID. Confirm current rules with each town clerk before you canvass.

Do Nassau and Suffolk counties regulate home improvement salespeople?+

Yes. In Nassau, a salesperson can't negotiate for a licensed contractor until the licensee holds a letter of authorization for them; Suffolk Consumer Affairs issues a separate Home Improvement Sales license. Confirm current requirements with the county and town.

When should NYC and Long Island companies start hiring canvassers?+

Door-knocking slows in winter, so most teams ramp from spring through early fall — opening roles in late winter gives new reps time to clear town permits and train before the busy season.
